Numerology is a branch of Indian astrology. We daresay that had it not been for the invention of numerology, the development of astrology would not have taken place the way it eventually did. This science is the foundation-stone of all the inventions that have taken place right from the prehistoric era to our own day and age.
The basic principle of numerology is that not just the life of the individual but the machinations of this entire vast universe are all governed by numerology. For example, a baby born in any corner of the world shall have a gestation period that would not exceed nine months. It is not possible for an American baby to have a gestation period that is longer or shorter than that of a baby born in Africa. This leads us to the next proposition that all living or non-living entities in this world are bound by the rules of numerals from one to nine and also by the mysterious digit of zero.
An example would be a day on earth having 24 hours. If we were to go behind this figure, we would find that the root numeral in this case is six as 2+4=6. Therefore, numerology is based primarily on these nine digits although compound numbers also have their own significance.
According to the principles of numerology, all the flora, fauna, and celestial bodies in this universe are bound by the rules of a specific number. If these rules are broken, the results are decidedly undesirable.
Within numerology the digits from 1-9 have their own significance.
If a person is born on the 1st, 10th or 19th of any month, then his birth-number would be one since, according to the principles of numerology every numerical entity can be reduced to the nine basic numerals from 1-9.
All of us are born from the 1st to the 31st of one month or the other. Therefore, if a person is born between the 10th to the 31st, the date of birth can also be reduced to one of the nine basic numerals as explained above by adding the digits. For example, a person born on the 25th of October would have his birth-number as 7. This birth-number always holds a special significance in the person’s life. An accurate way of testing the truth of this proposition is to keep a regular diary wherein towards the end of each and every year one would be able to comprehend the significance of the particular numeral in that person’s life.
In all the civilized nations of the world, numerology is an exceedingly popular science. Originally, numerology has been a branch of Indian astrology. However, the task of spreading the message of this ancient Indian science has been accomplished by Chiero in the modern era. His contribution to this endeavour can be compared to the efforts of Max Mueller who ensured that the Vedas and their sublime philosophy reached the Western world.
While praising the achievements of this ancient Indian branch of knowledge in his book Numerology, the author says, “Today, when we discuss numerology, we must not forget that the Hindus were the first ones who calculated the rate at which the sun’s rays touched the equator. According to their research, such an occurrence took place once every 25, 827 years. After hundreds of years and with the aid of much more sophisticated instruments, scientists have found their conclusions to be correct. Till date, we have not been able to comprehend how these people have reached these conclusions and how they managed to do all these complex calculations without the aid of any instruments.”
One might even go to the extent of saying that the invention of zero and the myriad uses of numerals from one to nine have taken man from the stone-age to the space-age. In each and every social setting, there are certain pioneers. Even as these pioneering men and women enlighten us towards the path of progress, they also leave behind an enduring legacy that remains relevant for mankind even after hundreds of years. Numerology is one such legacy.
The oldest instance of the use of numerals in India is found in the Rig Veda. Under the Rig Vedic scheme, the year is divided into lunar months. One year is said to contain 360 days and an equal number of nights that are divided into twelve months. According to a substantial number of scholars, the Rig Veda is one of the most important religious texts in the world.
In ancient China, numbers were depicted through the medium of dots. Once, in course of an important excavation, the Chinese emperor and his labourers discovered a gigantic tortoise. On his shell was drawn a rectangular diagram divided into nine equal-sized squares. The special feature of this diagram was that if one were to add the digits horizontally or vertically, the sum would be fifteen. The diagram is depicted below.
In the Rig Veda, the mention of computation of time by means of days, months and years clearly indicates that the science of numerology is known to our ancient seers and sages. Another basic principle of numerology is that each and every numerical figure however big it might be can be reducible to a single number from one to nine as has been put forward earlier.
Often, when predictions according to numerology are published in magazines and newspapers it is said that the date on which a person is born is identical to his birth-number. However, this is an oversimplification in the light of the above postulate. This postulate can be illustrated by means of an example: If a person is born on the 15th of June in the year 2001, then the number 6 (1+5=6) would influence his daily life while the numbers 3 (2+0+0+1) and 6 (June being the sixth month) would have an important bearing upon his future.
All digits from one to nine have their own positive and negative attributes along with specific vibrations:

Religion, Planets and Art
All ancient religious traditions of the world have a long history of depiction of celestial bodies in painting and sculpture.Be it the Pharaohs of Egypt or the civilizations of Babylon, Crete, Greece, Rome, Harappa, Buddhists or the Brahmins of India themselves, all have depicted their religious beliefs in the form of pictorial depictions or sculpture.
In Hinduism, the anthropomorphication of Gods and planets is done via mantras or sacred chants. When the ancient Hindu sages meditated upon some Godhead, an image used to form itself in their mind. This image was described by them in the mantras. The artists and sculptors of ancient and medieval India used to keep these images in mind while depicting them in their creations. This tradition is alive even today.
All fine arts have a common feature in the sense that particular styles change over time and across geographical boundaries. The most ancient depiction of the nine planets can be found in Graecoroman art. The depth and gravity that is evident in the art of ancient Greece and Rome is not to be found elsewhere.
As far as the Indian context is concerned, planets have been mentioned in the Rig Veda. However, as far as their artistic depiction is concerned, such instances are few and far in between. Nonetheless, some manuscripts and books from the 20th century onwards do contain such illustrations. However, these depictions lack depth and gravity quite unlike Greek art.
In creating these paintings, I have tried to draw upon traditional astrology while trying to interpret it through a scientific paradigm. I daresay such an attempt has not been made by any artist in the contemporary era. For this purpose, I have used the stylistic formulations of what is popularly known as modern art. The artists who can be called the founders of modern art include Turner, Monet, Manet and Paul Cezanne. Also, mention must be made of artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Kandinsky and Jackson Pollock. However, what is especially noteworthy is that styles like Cubism as developed by Picasso draw heavily upon prehistoric African art. In a similar vein, Van Gogh was influenced by Japanese prints while Vassily Kandinsky was inspired by Tantric art. Therefore, in light of the above observations, it is evident that the mystery and beauty pervading Oriental art-forms has always held an irresistible attraction for artists from the Occident.
All of us feel attracted towards demigods and celestial bodies that are accorded a similar hallowed status in our tradition. In these paintings, I have tried to the best of my abilities to capture that mysterious but nonetheless attractive quality.
